In short
- OpenAi unveiled an initiative for the public sector and a $ 200 million contract with the Ministry of Defense.
- The OpenAI for the government wants to use AI for non-fighting tasks, such as improving health care and analyzing defense data.
- It follows the quiet policy shift of OpenAi that opened the door to military applications.
Chatgpt – developer OpenAI has launched a new division on Monday to further integrate its artificial intelligence tools into US government activities – and it starts with a pilot contract of $ 200 million with the US Department of Defense.
Musk’s Xai was left, which is not surprising considering the spectacular bladder that the richest man in the world had earlier this month with President Donald Trump.
The new federal initiative, called OpenAI for the government, consolidates the existing projects of the company under one umbrella and expands access to the most advanced models.
“During these efforts, we want to improve both the daily experience of public services and to help government employees more empowered, more efficiently and more supported in their critical missions,” Openai said in a rack.
According to OpenAI, the Ministry of Defense, awarded through its most important digital and artificial intelligence office, will investigate how generative AI can streamline non-fighting tasks, making “all use cases consistent with the user policy and the guidelines of OpenAI.”
While OpenAi said that the deal is in accordance with its policy not to allow its AI tools in military applications, the company was confronted with control in January 2024 after it had quietly removed its ban on the use of chatgpt for military purposes.
Other federal agencies that are already working with OpenAI are NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of the Treasury and the Air Force Research Laboratory.
In addition, OpenAI models are used in the National Laboratories Los Alamos, Lawrence Library and Sandia.
In January, OpenAi, Oracle and Japanese conglomerate Softbank merged with the Trump administration in launching Stargate, an initiative of $ 500 billion in a private sector for AI development in the US
It is not as if Xai is completely closed off from the federal government.
Unnamed sources told Reuters That a modified version of Grok, Xai’s Chatbot, was used to analyze the data from the Homeland Security department, “possibly the violation of conflict or interest laws and risky information about millions of Americans contrary.”
The DHS has denied the statement.
